What Will I Learn?

Autumn Term-
‘Civil Rights’. Learning about Prejudice and religious persecution, focusing on the Civil Rights Movement in 1960’s America and also the Holocaust during WWII.

Spring Term –
‘The Environment’. A study on the origins of the universe; looking at religious and scientific viewpoints. Investigating the idea of stewardship and how to protect our planet.

Summer Term-
‘Founders of Faith’ An in-depth study of the life of Jesus and Muhammad, looking at the impact Christianity and Islam has had on the world. This is also a preparation course for GCSE where students will need to understand issues in Christianity and Islam.

How Will I Be Assessed?

For assessment students will produce a booklet ‘An Outline of the life of Martin Luther King Jr.’ (AT1)

And also ‘Create a Bag’, Anne Frank could only take one school satchel with her into hiding. Design a satchel and its contents with your most essential and beloved items (AT2)

‘The Environment’ will be assessed as a project set by Suffolk County Council on keeping our local environment clean and environmentally friendly. (AT2)

‘Founders of Faith’ to create a ‘Believers Handbook’, a pocket guide to the teachings of either Jesus or the Prophet Muhammad. (AT1)

What Different Types of Activities Will I Do Over Time to Help Me Learn?

In Yr8 you will be:

  • Developing your essay/ writing skills
  • Involved in a class environmental project to help the local community in Ipswich
  • Listen to a talk from a member of the Christian and Muslim community about the powerful impact that Jesus/Muhammad has had on their life

How Will This Help Me to Progress to the Next Year or Key Stage?

Yr8 will give the students a sound knowledge of how Christians and Muslims put their beliefs into action and this will help students make progress when they begin GCSE Religious Studies

Year 9

What Will I Learn?

GCSE Religious Studies begins in YR9. The modules studied throughout Yr9 are:

  • Animal Rights
  • Planet Earth
  • War and Peace
  • Early Life

Continued into YR10

  • Medical Ethics
  • Euthanasia
  • Crime
  • Drugs

How Will I Be Assessed?

All 4 topics are ethical issues where pupils explore their own opinions as well as the views of Muslims and Christians on each topic. These four subjects make up one half of the GCSE. The second half of the course is studied over four topics in Yr10. The GCSE is 100% examination taken in the Summer term of Yr10.
In class students will have an end of unit test to monitor progress as each topic is covered.

During GCSE you will need to use a range of skills to cover the topics being studied.

How Will This Help Me to Progress to the Next Year or Key Stage?

Students can implement the background knowledge gained in YR7 and 8 to produce great work and gain fantastic results at GCSE.
